Most of the news is focused the politics of the raid, but I found this
article a professor that points out a timeline that is actually pretty
wild.
Basically back in mid-2024 archaeologists confirmed a previously
unknown culture and massive snake markers in the Tepuis (Lost
World mountains). Almost immediately after that discovery, Maduro
locked the whole area down, claiming it was to stop illegal mining and
moved the military in.
Now 18 months later the goes in to take him out. The article argues
this is the tomb of Gilgamesh all over again, using a military invasion to
secure an archaeological site/asset, just like the rumors about the
Gilgamesh tomb discovery right before the Iraq invasion in 2003.
If you subscribe to the theory that governments use war as a cover to
fight over ancient history/tech, this connects a lot of dots. The
charge makes for a perfect screen to get boots on the
ground in a restricted zone.
