(1986)
A group of hackers and criminals,
including individuals connected to
Serbian or Yugoslav nationalist circles,
exploited Deutsche Bank’s computer
systems to fraudulently transfer
millions of Deutsche Marks (the
currency of West Germany at the time).
The breach involved insider knowledge
—some suspects had worked at the
bank or had access to its systems.
The perpetrators manipulated the
bank’s software to redirect funds to
dummy accounts before withdrawing
the money.
The exact amount stolen remains
unclear, but estimates range from
several million to tens of millions of
Deutsche Marks (equivalent to millions
of dollars today).
