the workaround of changing the user agent is only necessary for the Gitlab sign-in page.
Once signed in it seems to work fine with the default user agent.
All the Cloudflare behavior seems to be highly geo-location specific. For example, this trick
worked for me until yesterday in one location, but stopped working when moved my laptop to
a different location.
