TIL: a holocaust denial group offered to anyone who could prove
that gas chambers were used to intentionally kill people at Auschwitz.
They were forced a judge to pay the money, and an additional
to Auschwitz survivor Mel Mermelstein who gave proof of that very
fact.

The offer:
The Institute for Historical Review publicly offered a reward of $50,000 for verifiable "proof that gas chambers
for the purpose of killing human beings existed at or in Auschwitz."
The "proof":
In California, the Evidence Code permits the Court to take judicial notice of "facts and propositions of generalized
knowledge that are so universally known that they cannot reasonably be the subject of dispute."
Now not a holocaust denier, but this is very disappointing and seems like a major legal loophole. They technically
weren't able to prove that the gas chambers existed, which is pretty surprising. I would think this should be quite
easy to prove with all the photos I remember seeing in the Holocaust museums as a kid.
The legal loophole they used seems incredibly dangerous and reminds me of the many historical blunders of "common
sense", such as thinking the earth was flat, that it was at the center of the universe, countless religious ideas, etc.

IIRC the judge didn't look at evidence, he basically just said "the holocaust
obviously happened lad" and gave the survivor guy some cash money.
